Fly Fishing Guide in Tuscany & Umbria

Tail Water Tevere Sansepolcro (Arezzo- Tuscany)

Near the town of Sansepolcro, the Tevere flows through the Tuscan countryside (about 1,5 hours south of Florence). Below the Montedoglio Dam,  the Tevere is around 80 feet at the widest. It branches often and this makes it easily wadable. The tailwater is extremely fertile and full of insect life. There are mainly browns and graylings. The fish range from 12″ to several pounds. The Browns are rather particular and selective to the hatches and require 7X tipped or more for surface activity. They do not fear humans as the stream gets lots of activity. The river is famous for grayling, it is the most southern river beat where this fish spawns. The constant water flow and water temperature, allow very good fishing throughout the warmest months. This river is restricted to classic fly-fishing only and catch-and-release regulations. Fishing is carried out mostly with dry flies, imitating the very rich presence of mayflies and caddis.

On the upper reaches of Rome’s famous River Tiber (Tevere), in a deep dam: This causes cool water to flow from the  tail-race and flows through the warm and dusty  terracotta plains of eastern Tuscany. Here, there is a fly only , catch & release wild water  which winds its way down through lush, tree-lined banks for eight kilometers and holds and excellent head of quality brown trout and grayling. The 8-kilometers stretch is fished hard , so this is technical fishing-precise casting under trees and dragless presentation with tiny  (size 20) flies, but guides are available . The season runs from May and finished at the end of December. The best fishing starts in the middle of July, with excellent hatches of plecoptera and blue-winged olives occurring in October and November, and rare, white Mayfly (Ephemera Glaucops),  with hatches in September evenings.  Fly Fishing & Fly Tying Magazine UK

Nearby is a hatchery and an education center. This same hatchery provided the fish stocked in the Tevere Tail Water and others rivers in central Italy. This river is restricted to classic fly-fishing only and catch-and-release regulations. Fishing is carried out mostly with dry flies, imitating the very rich presence of mayflies and caddis.

Lower Nera River Ferentillo  ( Terni – Umbria)

The  Lower Nera NK  is a very interesting for the dry fly. The beat is 20 km far from the other flyfishing area ( Upper Nera), close to Ferentillo. This is a beautiful river with clear water that runs through weed beds. As all spring creeks, it is rich with insect life, and particularly known for Effemera Danica hatches in May and June.
The beat is divided into two distinct sections, spinning and fly fishing and fly fishing only, each with its own particular characteristics but both have a beautiful population of wild brown trout. This river is restricted to classic fly-fishing only and catch-and-release regulations. Fishing is carried out mostly with dry flies, imitating the very rich presence of mayflies and caddis. The river bottom is pretty easy to walk on, but walking continuously on the river causes the less trained to become a little more tired.
